Sudbury and Hockey History
Sudbury’s hockey legacy goes all the way back to the First World War. It was during that era that a junior hockey side named, the “Sudbury Cub Wolves,” was formed in the 1920s. They were members of the Nickel Belt Hockey League and then moved to the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Max Silverman was the manager who put the Wolves on the map for the first time by winning the George Richardson Memorial Trophy in the year 1932 and 1935 because they had won the Eastern Canadian championship. They also got their hands on the Memorial Cup in 1932 and ended up as runners-up in 1935.
The Second Coming
The Wolves’ second coming happened in 1962 as they became members of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey Association. They enjoyed success in the new league as well. They were crowned the NOJHL Champions in 1969 as well as 1971.
A year after their second NOJHL triumph, the Ontario Hockey Association came to Sudbury. The OHA arrival came as a result of Bud Burke, the Wolves owner, buying the Niagara Falls Flyers and merging it with the Wolves. Sam McMaster was hired as the team’s GM in the 1989-1990 season and that resulted in them racking up their first winning campaign in a decade.
The Championships
The Sudbury Wolves have won plenty of championships and accolades over the course of their history. They have won the Hamilton Spectator Trophy once, the Leyden Trophy once, the Bobby Orr Trophy once, the NOJHA McNamara Trophy twice, the Emms Trophy twice, and have also been crowned the NOJHA Regular Season champions once.
Now that they are all set to kick off the new season, this is your opportunity to watch them in action live. Just book your Sudbury Wolves tickets and catch some cracking hockey.
