The idea of Street League Skateboarding was put forward by an entrepreneur and professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek. His decision to launch the league was based on his critical review of the existing situation of skateboarding competitions. He then identified the areas and nature of flaws in such contests, in the light of which he designed the concept of SLS. Hence, 2010 saw the launch of a much more skilled and qualified sport competition in the shape of Street League Skateboarding. The first year consisted of a three city arena tour that began in Arizona, stopped in Ontario and concluded in Las Vegas.
The prime mission of the League is to facilitate and promote the sport on an international level. The contest features a number of twenty four professional skateboarders competing against each other for the largest prize in the history of the game. Last year’s winning champion, Nyjah Huston won a whopping $200,000. In addition to that, he was honored with a Chevy Sonic vehicle, a ring set by Nixon Watches as well as the exclusive championship Nixon Watch.
In addition to the prizes, other interesting characteristics of the competition include indoor concrete skate course (also known as the ‘plaza’) and the ISX scoring system. The course is prepared by California Skate parks. The ISX point scoring system allows the players to accumulate points for each trick of theirs, rather than on their overall performance on the course. Not only is this process beneficial and fair to the players, it enables the audience and professionals to notice their style and tricks on an individual level. SLX was the first to employ the ISX method into their contest thereby introducing it to other similar events.
In May of 2013, the GoPro camera company was declared as the camera sponsor of the upcoming SLS tour. They are also the official sponsors for contestants including Sean Malto and Ryan Sheckler. The GoPro cameras will be covering video footage of course previews, competition as well as the prize distribution ceremony. Street League has signed a partnership deal with ESPN for worldwide distribution of its live events in over hundred and ninety eight countries.
In support of the League’s mission, Nike SB has joined forces with the SLS to put together the SLS Nike SB World Tour 2013. Sponsored by the renowned sports brand, the event features the League’s skating stars that are all set to entertain the audience with thrilling twists and turns, as they set off on the course. So get your Street League Skateboarding tickets and brace yourselves for an exciting ride of the most dynamic international sports competition.
