The Legacy

The St. Mary's Gaels men's basketball program has been on a roll lately, much of which can be attributed to the guidance of their head coach, Randy Bennett. Bennett has had a lot of work to do, and he has done it in style. When he arrived in 2001, one of the first moves he made was to bring in Adam Caporn from Australia as his captain.

The Gaels had posted a 2-27 record in the season prior to Bennett's arrival. Slowly but surely, the record began to improve; they went 9-20 in the 2001-2002 season and then 15-15 the next year. This improvement continued in the 2003-2004 campaign, when the Gaels went 19-12.

The program then qualified for the NCAA Tournament in the next season, but came up short in the first round. That year, they went 15-1 at their home, the McKeon Pavilion, which was their best home record in history.

After spending the next two seasons building even more momentum, the St. Mary's Gaels posted a stellar 2007-2008 campaign. They stayed in the USA Today Top 25 list for six weeks. Then, in 2010, they made it to the NCAA Tournament once again, due to their clinching of the WCC Tournament. It was their second win with the previous one coming in 1987. Since then, they have gone from strength to strength.

The Gaels Postseason Record

The St. Mary's Gaels have made it to the NCAA Tournament eleven times. They have accumulated a 6-11 record in tournament games over the years. Additionally, the Gaels have made six trips to the National Invitation Tournaments. They have also been crowned conference tournament champions four times and conference regular season champions seven times.
