Why you can’t miss this fight?
For those of you who are unaware of the background to this much-awaited fight, here is some information that might help bring you all up to date.
On 18th March, 2017, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, lost his 115-pound world title, along with his status as the famous pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter in a match against Sor Rungvisai. Soon after this, Gonzalez’s co-promoters requested the WBC for a rematch. On Tuesday, 4th April, this request was approved by the WBC and a new fight between these two legends was ordered.
What happened during this fight?
Gonzalez, who is a four-division world champion from Nicaragua, ended up suffering two really bad cuts because of accidental head-butts. Other than that, he seemed to have had the upper hand and the heavier punches. In spite of that, he ended up losing the fight by majority decision. The scores stood at: 114-112, 114-112 and 113-113.
Everyone at the ringside saw Gonzalez as the clear winner of this super action packed fight. But Rungvisai won in a match that kept everyone glued to their seats throughout!
Why the WBC allowed a rematch?
Even though there was a lot of opposition to the idea of a rematch, mainly by fans of Rungvisai, the WBC announced that there would indeed be another face off between these two legends. The date set was September 9th, 2017. The venue would be the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. In a statement released by the WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman, the rematch was justified in the following words,
“The WBC Board of Governors considers that due to the extraordinary fight, which was extremely close, and considering that the WBC championship rules regarding accidental head butts were not used, but most importantly, considering the public demand to witness once again a great match between these two great fighters, the WBC has granted the request by unanimous vote to order the rematch between Sor Rungvisai and Gonzalez”
In addition to that, one of the rules of the WBC states that if an accidental head-butt causes one of the fighters to suffer a cut, the other fighter is penalized by deduction on one point. This rule, however, is not used in the US. If the rule had been applied, Rungvisai would be two points less than his final scoring and would have eventually lost the fight via majority draw.
