New York Yankees: The Origins

The Yankees were established in Baltimore soon after the turn of the 20^th century. Known as the Baltimore Orioles upon inception, the side relocated to New York City in 1903 and took the name New York Highlanders. Since the very beginning, they have been part of the American League (AL).

The Hilltop Park (American League Park) was the team’s first home ballpark. In 1912, the franchise was renamed New York Yankees and they moved to the Polo Grounds (IV), also known as the Brush Stadium. The place served as The Pinstripers’ home until 1922, at which point they moved to the old Yankee Stadium (I).

From 1923 until 2009, the Yankee Stadium was the scene of many great triumphs. In 2009, it was demolished and a state-of-the-art new facility was constructed which we all know today as the Yankee Stadium (II). The place regularly attracts huge crowds and The Yanks are often among the leading sides in terms of attendance for MLB games.

To date, the Yankees have won the MLB World Series an astonishing 27 times. The next best record in the league belongs to the St. Louis Cardinals who have 11 World Series triumphs to their name. Other honors for the Yanks include 40 American League pennants and 19 AL East Division championships.

The side from the Big Apple also leads the way in terms of World Series appearances. They have featured in the grand showdown an incredible 40 times. The next-best appearance record belongs to the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers who have both played in 20 World Series encounters.

Many of the greatest baseball players of all time have donned the Yankees’ colors over the years. These include the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and Whitney Ford among many others. All of them have been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In total, the Yankees boast of 55 Hall of Fame inductees (44 players and 11 managers).
