Minnesota Twins: Origin and History
The Minnesota Twins were set up as the Washington Senators in 1901. They were one of the eight original teams making up the American League (AL). The team’s first home was the American League Park. During their time in the capital, the franchise also played at the National Park and the Griffith Stadium.
In 1961, the side relocated to Minnesota after nearly six decades in Washington. They made the Metropolitan Stadium their first home ballpark after moving to the Land of 10,000 Lakes. This is where the Twins played for the next two decades before moving to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. In 2009, they switched to the newly-constructed Target Field which is an open-air ballpark.
Having a capacity of more than 39,000, the Target Field can also accommodate soccer, football and concerts apart from baseball games. In 2010, it was ranked as North America’s best baseball stadium experience by ESPN The Magazine.
Honors and Accomplishments
The Twins have won three MLB World Series crowns, 6 American League (AL) Pennants, 4 AL West Division titles and 7 AL Central Division championships. The maiden World Series triumph came in 1924 when the team was still known as the Washington Senators. And they did so in their very first postseason appearance.
The following year, the then Senators appeared in their second straight World Series but ultimately fell short in seven games against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since the relocation to Minnesota, the Twins have featured in the World Series on three occasions, going on to lift the coveted Commissioner’s Trophy twice.
The 2000s were the most productive decade for the side from The Gopher State in terms of playoff appearances. While a World Series win eluded the Twinkies during this period, they were perennial contenders for the ultimate honor.
Many great players have represented the Twins over the years and decades. These include the likes of National Baseball Hall of Famers Rod Carew, Paul Molitor, Jack Morris, Dave Winfield and Harmon Killebrew among others. To watch the current crop in action, get your Spring Training Minnesota Twins tickets at the first opportunity.
Till now, the Twins have fielded 19 batting champions in the American League. Moreover, five MLB All-Star Games have been played at their home ballpark. Two of these have been in Washington while three have taken place in Minnesota.
Since 1994, the Twins have been part of the MLB’s AL Central Division, having previously plied their trade in the AL West Division for over two decades.
