Boston Red Sox: Beginning of a Great Tradition
The Boston Red Sox were established in 1901 as the Boston Americans. The team began play in the American League (AL) that year. For the first decade of the Red Sox’s existence, the Huntington Avenue Grounds served as their home ballpark. In 1912, the side from The Cradle of Liberty moved to the Fenway Park and have played their home games at the venue ever since.
The BoSox have given the baseball world many wonderful moments over the years and decades. These include the “mad dash” by right pitcher Enos Slaughter in 1946, the “Impossible Dream” of 1967 and the “home run” by catcher Carlton Fisk in 1975 among others.
Apart from being one of the top sides in terms of on-field performances, the Red Sox also consistently lead the MLB’s attendance charts for road games. Between May, 2003 and April, 2013, the team sold out 820 home games in a row. Out of these, 794 were regular season encounters. This is a professional sports record in the United States.
Achievements and Greatest Players
The Red Sox’s storied history is full of spectacular triumphs. Soon after being established in the early 20th century, they were quite dominant in the MLB. In 1903, the Red Sox won their maiden World Series crown. This was also the first championship showdown between the pennant winners of the American League (AL) and the National League (NL).
By 1918, The Sox had won the World Series 5 times. This was a record at the time which has since been eclipsed by the New York Yankees. In total, they have won the World Series on 9 occasions. Other accolades include 14 AL Pennants and 10 AL East Division titles. On 7 occasions, the Red Sox have earned a wild card berth to enter the playoffs.
In every era, the team has had some great players representing them. These include people like Babe Ruth, Pedro Martinez, Harry Hooper, Wade Boggs, Ted Williams, Jim Rice, Carlton Fisk, Jimmy Collins, Joe Cronin and Rick Ferrell among others. The current crop, many of whom were part of the Red Sox’s 2018 World Series triumph, will also be looking to cement their legacies in the upcoming season by winning more silverware.
The upcoming Spring Training is the perfect opportunity to prepare for the latest shot at glory. You can expect most of the players on the Red Sox roster to be in action when the Grapefruit League gets underway in late February.
