The idea for the creation of the club was first brought up by sporting legend Lamar Hunt. Hunt was responsible for the development of the American Football League (AFL), the North American Soccer League (NASL) and the Major League Soccer (MLS). He was also the founding father of the World Championship Tennis. He was inducted in to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972, the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1982 and the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1993. He set up the MLS in 1995 and decided to form his own soccer club as well. That is when he founded the Columbus Crew and the Kansas City Wizards.

Previously known as the Wiz and then the Wizards, it wasn’t until 2010 that the name Sporting was  selected. Incepted in 1996, the franchise quickly established itself as one of the best in the league and started challenging for all the top prizes, right from the word go. Sporting managed to win the MLS Cup twice in 2000 and 2013 as well as the MLS Supporters' Shield in 2000.

Since the Sporting Kansas City have played as members of both the Western and Eastern conferences in the past, they have managed titles in both. In 2000 and 2004 they won the Western Conference playoffs while in 2013 they won the Eastern playoffs. They won the Western Conference regular season title thrice in 1997, 2000 and 2004 while winning the Eastern regular season crown twice in 2011 and 2012. Sporting has also won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup twice, in 2004 and 2012. They have also got their hands on the Desert Diamond Cup once. The franchise has managed to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League four times over the years, making it to the quarter finals twice and the semifinal once.
