The Safe Bowl Rivalry
The rivalry between the SMU Mustangs and the Mean Green football teams began in October, 1922 when they first met at the Armstrong Field. The inaugural game was won by Mustangs with a perfect 66-0 score. In the next few years, the SMU Mustangs dominated the rivalry winning 8 more games. The North Texas Mean Green scored its first rivalry win in 1933 at the Ownby Stadium. As of 2014, the ‘Safe Bowl’ rivalry has presented 34 games with the Mustangs leading with 28 wins.

The Southern Methodist Mustangs is the name adopted by all the varsity sports fielded by the Southern Methodist University.
