Solheim Cup Tickets

The first ever Solheim Cup was organized in 1990 and was then staged every two years. In 2002, this was changed when it began taking place in years alternating with the Ryder Cup, a similar tournament for male pro golfers. It features teams from various countries. The US team, for example, is selected based on points each pro golfer has. These points are based upon their performance on the LPGA Tour, particularly if they finish in the top twenty of the tour.

The European team that takes part in the Solheim Cup is selected based on points earned while playing in the Ladies European Tour. In 2007, for example, the top five Ladies European Tour golfers were selected, as well as four more based on the Women’s World Golf Rankings. A number of more players are then chosen by the team captains, which does not depend upon points though captain usually go on and pick players by ranking. Team captains are often chosen from those with experience playing in the Solheim Cup and other similar golf tournaments.

The tournament itself is held for three days with twenty eight exciting matches. This includes eight foursome matches, eight four balls and twelve singles played on the last day of the tournament. The Ryder Cup also uses a similar format. The golf course that hosts the tournament often changes. The next tournament, set to be held in 2015, will be organized at the famous German golf course, the St Leon–Rot golf course, which has hosted the European Tour’s Deutsche Bank – SAP Open TPC of Europe.
 

In 2011, the European team won the tournament, which was held at the Killeen Castle Golf Resort in Ireland. In 2009, the US team won the tournament, which was held at the Rich Harvest Farms golf course in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Both the 2005 tournament, held in Indiana and the 2007 tournament, held in Sweden, were won by the US. Overall, the US team has won eight of the twelve tournaments held.
