The SHU initiated their basketball program during the early 1900s, with the team first competing in intercollegiate events during the 1903-04 season.

However, a short hiatus followed with the SHU not fielding a basketball outfit until the 1908-09 campaign. The re-entry proved to be a memorable one with the Seton Hall team achieving their first winning record at only the second time of asking. It hosts games like basketball, lacrosse, indoor soccer, ice hockey, music concerts and even TV shows. The women basket ball team of Seton Hall Pirates uses Walsh Gymnasium. For baseball and soccer Owen T. Caroll Field is used. This stadium is located in South Orange, New Jersey and can seat up to 600 spectators.

Seton Hall Pirates have been actively taking part in games since the last three decades now. The men and women teams take part in games like basketball, cross country, golf, swimming & diving and soccer. The women teams also participate in tennis, volleyball and softball. The Pirates have qualified for the NIT basketball tournament 16 times. Some of the fine players that have been inducted in the esteemed university Hall of Fame are athlete Tracy Baskin who won the NCAA American championship three times, swimmer Louis Benza, baseball players Craig Biggio and Edward Blankmeyer, basketball players Harry Brooks and Jodi Brooks. Acclaimed fencing player and coach of Seton Hall Pirates Hanry Boutsikaris was awarded a Life Time Achievement Award in 1989 for his services for the game.
