History of the San Jose Spartans
The San Jose State University fielded a football team back in 1893. Their earlier regular season games mostly consisted of games against high schools in the vicinity and various local colleges. Between the 1930s and 1940s, the team was considered one of the strongest members of college football leagues, winning 12 consecutive titles along with eight conference championship titles in a matter of 18 years. The 1932 and 1939 seasons were the only two undefeated seasons in the history of the school.
With the fame of the game growing, the university invested in the construction of the Spartan Stadium in 1933, with a capacity of 18,000. The first football game played here was also won by the Spartans, starting things off on a high note. The seating capacity of the stadium was increased through the years by multiple renovations.
The Spartan football team entered their “golden age” in 1973, winning 15 seasons in a span of 20 years, beating strong teams from Stanford and University of Michigan, among others. The team has also appeared in national rankings in 1939, standing at number 19 in week seven and 18 in week eight. After this, the team appeared in the national rankings in 1975, ranking at number 20 in week 13.
In 2004, the team faced some financial troubles, thanks to rising costs and cuts in state funding. Due to this, some members of the SJSU faculty suggested that the team drop from the Division I-A level. In the same year, the team managed to defeat the Rice Owls 70-63 in a memorable game that set a record for total points scored and total touchdowns for a non-overtime game.
The next few years were a little tough on the team. From 2005 till 2009, the San Jose State football program had to suffer through heavy NCAA sanctions, due to the failure to meet Academic Progress Rates. However, the sanctions were lifted by the Spring of 2010 and the San Jose State Spartans were back in full swing!
