San Antonio Spurs: A Jog Down Memory Lane
The San Antonio Spurs were established in the late 1960s as the Dallas Chaparrals in the American Basketball Association (ABA). They began playing in the 1967-68 season, as one of the eleven founding franchises of the new league. In 1973, the team moved to San Antonio after six years in Dallas and the surrounding areas, and were renamed the San Antonio Gunslingers for the 1973-74 ABA season. However, before the season began, they changed their name again, and have been known as the San Antonio Spurs ever since. After the ABA merged with the NBA in 1976, the Spurs joined the consolidated new league. Today, they are one of four former ABA teams still competing in the NBA, alongside the Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and Brooklyn Nets. The Spurs are also the only ones to have won an NBA championship. Beyond basketball, they are the only representatives from San Antonio in any of America's four major professional sports leagues. The AT&T Center has been the Spurs' home since 2002, and prior to that, they played their home games at the HemisFair Arena (1973-1993) and the Alamodome (1993-2002).
Franchise Accomplishments
The Spurs have one of the best playoff qualification records of any NBA franchise. Since moving to the Alamo City, they have only failed to reach the postseason on four occasions as of the 2018-19 campaign. Furthermore, they have yet to miss playoff qualification in the 21st century, which is a phenomenal record whichever way you look at it.
One of the most decorated sides in the league, the Spurs have five NBA titles to their name. Only the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, and the Golden State Warriors have won the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy more times than that. They also have 22 Division crowns and six Conference championships to their credit.
Greatest Players
Of course, you need top players to achieve what the Spurs have achieved in their history. They have had some of the game's finest exponents in their ranks over time, such as Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Avery Johnson, Tracy McGrady, David Robinson, Manu Ginóbili, Kawhi Leonard, and George Gervin, among others.
Many great coaches have also been at the helm of affairs for the Spurs, none more so than the incumbent Gregg Popovich. Since 1996, the legendary basketball strategist has guided the side from The Lone Star State to all five of their NBA titles. To see how his team's latest push for glory unfolds, grab your San Antonio Spurs tickets at the first opportunity.
