The NFL is the most popular professional sports league in the country with attendance records and viewership increasing day by day. However none of it would have been possible without college football playing its part. It is where the sport was developed, where all the future stars are created. On top of that, this is where the Rose Bowl, one of the most highly anticipated games of the year and the oldest bowl game in history, is held.

The Game

The Rose Bowl has long been the most awaited game on the college football calendar and is held on the first of January every year. If the day falls on a Sunday then the game is held on the following Monday, something that has happened fourteen times to date. The bowl game itself was first held in 1902 but went on hiatus for a while before returning in 1916 and has been held annually ever since.

The fixture is usually played between the winners of the PAC-12 and Big Ten conferences. However, in recent years it has also played host to championship games and is now officially part of the College Football Playoffs. Every three years, they will host the semifinals instead of their usual encounter. The first such game was held in 2015 between the Oregon Ducks and the Florida State Seminoles, a fixture the former won quite comfortably.

The Past

The first Rose Bowl was held in 1902 and was originally called the “Tournament East-West football game.” It featured Stanford and Michigan, with the latter going on to win the game, 49-0. Due to the one sided score line, the bowl game was put on hold for the next thirteen years. However it finally made a comeback in 1916 and was officially named the ‘Rose Bowl.’

Throughout its history, the conference winner from the East has faced the winner from the West, specifically from the Big Nine and PCC, as they were known at the time. After the 1998 season, the Bowl Championship Series was created and as a result the Rose Bowl fixture became dependant on the results of the series as a whole. This is why it has served as the championship game on two occasions; during the 2002 and the 2006 seasons.

The Records

The Rose Bowl has featured a host of different teams over the years, all of whom have experienced varying degrees of success. The University of Southern California (USC) has made the highest number of appearances over the years with thirty three and have also managed to win the contest the most times, with twenty four wins to date. They are followed by Michigan in both categories, as they have appeared in the Rose Bowl twenty times and winning it eight times in total.

With competition especially fierce this year, each team will have to be at its best to make it to this showpiece encounter this season. If you are a college football fan, you can be part of the experience as well. Just get your Rose Bowl tickets and enjoy this thrilling contest, live at the Rose Bowl.
