The Crossroads classic is a manifestation of an idea conceived by Morgan Burke, who was the athletic director at Purdue. He wanted to recreate the Hoosier Classic, a basketball tournament that used to feature Purdue, Butler, Notre Dame and Indiana too. The first edition of the Crossroads Classic took place in 2011 and in the year 2014, the four schools reached an agreement to extend it all the way till 2019.

The Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball program traces its roots back to the year 1896. They have a winning percentage of well over .630 which is a remarkable feat over such a long period of time. The Boilermakers have done very well on the basketball court. They have been crowned conference regular season champions 23 times, the most recent of those triumphs coming in 2017. No other Big Ten program has managed to win more conference titles than the Boilermakers. They have also won the conference tournament once.
