The History Of PRCA

The seeds for the formation of PRCA were planted in 1936 when a group of cowboys and cowgirls walked out of rodeo at the Madison Square Garden and boycotted the promoter’s next event in Boston Garden. The group forced the well-known rodeo producer of that time, W.T. Johnson to acknowledge their demand for better prize money and judges. Johnson finally gave in which led to the inception o Cowboy’s Turtle Association.

In 1945, the Turtles renamed themselves as the Rodeo Cowboy Association which in 1975 turned into the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. In 1979, the PRCA headquarters were established in Colorado Springs which now includes the Museum of the American Cowboy and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.

The PRCA currently hosts over six hundred top-of-the-line rodeo spectacles each year around the United States. It also holds its events in Canada, Mexico and Brazil. The organization sanctions seven different events including, bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, steer roping and bull riding.
