Although still a young team, Peoria Rivermen was formed in 1982-83 when it was part of the old international Hockey League and called as Peoria Prancers. Peoria Civic Center took over the team and held a contest to name the team. It was then that the title was renamed as Peoria Rivermen as Rivermen was the winner of the contest. The success came to the team in 1984-85 when the team won IHL Turner Cup and thus set a stepping stone of success.

The franchise played at ECHL before moving to American Hockey League. Peoria Rivermen is stated as the oldest ninth minor pro league hockey franchise in the history that is continuously operating in the history. In 2010-2011 Peoria celebrated their 29th celebration and marked the announcement and sale of St. Louis Blues, Scottrade Center and Peoria Rivermen . The team was sold to Tom Stillman in 2012 while it is gearing up for an exciting season and a thrilling game is expected to emerge soon.
