The 27 varsity teams of Pennsylvania State University, for both men and women, are known as the Penn State Nittany Lions, with the exception of the women's basketball team, which is called the Lady Lions. The school colors for the Nittany Lions are white and blue, and the mascot is a Nittany Lion that entertains the crowd during all home games. Having commissioned its Intercollegiate Athletics Logo in 1893, the university has teams in sports such as basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, fencing, field hockey, soccer, gymnastics, football, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, golf, wrestling, and cross country. For most of these sports, Penn State participates in the Big Ten Conference and NCAA Division I FBS. Some sports, such as men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse, take part in various conferences, since they are not sponsored by the Big Ten. Similarly, the men's volleyball team participates in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA), while the fencing teams of both men and women operate independently.

Penn State has always finished in the top 25 of the NACDA Director's Cup, according to the list published by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics that charts the overall success rate in college sports of all institutions. In the 2007-08 standings, PSU finished in 9th place, which was their eighth time to finish in the top 10. To date, Penn State has achieved 66 national team championships, 38 of which are NCAA championships, ranking them ninth all time. The women's teams have also earned several championships under the sponsorship of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) before 1982, and also under the sponsorship of the NCAA after 1982. Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1991, and since then, they have won 11 tournament championships and 53 regular Big Ten Championships, making them the leading Big Ten school with the most national championships of any other.

The most popular athletic team of the university is its football team, whose head coach is Joe Paterno, one of the most successful national coaches. The Nittany Lions take part in two football "trophy games" with other members of the Big Ten: the Governor's Victory Bell and the Land Grant Trophy. The team has a huge fan following across the nation, and whenever there is a football match of the Nittany Lions, it attracts thousands of football buffs to the campus from all around. The football stadium for the team is called Beaver Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 107,282 and is considered the largest stadium in the country. On September 14th, 2002, the stadium had the largest crowd in the entire history of the game, with approximately 111,000 people gathering to watch the Nittany Lions play against the University of Nebraska. The Nittany Lions stunned the viewers by defeating the opposing team with a score of 40-7.

Penn State has also constructed a museum that honors all Penn State Nittany Lion athletes. It is known as the Penn State All-Sports Museum. The top level of the museum is dedicated to basketball teams and other indoor sports played by Penn State, while the ground level is devoted to outdoor sports. The lower level’s exhibit honors the renowned Penn State football team, their cheerleading staff, and all those students who have represented the mascot, the Nittany Lion, so far. The Nittany Lions are playing with full zest, so make sure to attend their marvelous play live. Order your Penn State Nittany Lions tickets and support them live in the stadium!
