The popularity of soccer has been increasing at a very steady rate over the years as more and more people in America have started to embrace the sport. It has been the most watched sport in the world for a very long time now and has always recorded high average attendance figures compared to other sports. That has led to a rise in new soccer teams being set up in different parts of the country and now Orlando has decided to join the party.
Since its formation, the Orlando City Soccer Club has reinvigorated the surrounding area and given the local population a new team to support. Coming from the United Soccer League, people were already aware of the franchise but their move to the MLS has put them among the country’s soccer elite.
Ever since plans were drawn up for a new club, a lot of focus was put in to the development of the team itself, ranging from the venue, to the squad as well as backroom staff and coaches. Now that the franchise is ready to go, here is your chance to see this exciting new team live. Just get your Orlando City SC tickets and enjoy watching this emerging powerhouse of a franchise, live in action.
The Orlando City Soccer Club was set up in 2010 as an affiliate of the Orlando Titans National Lacrosse League team. However, the lacrosse team started to face some financial problems which prompted the team to be sold to Phil Rawlins. Rawlins was the board member of Stoke City, a popular soccer club based in the English Premier League and brought his considerable experience to help the club make the move to the MLS.
The franchise enjoyed quite a lot of success in the four years it was part of the USL. They managed to finish top of the league for three years, only missing out by coming second in 2013. They were also regular playoff contenders and managed to go all the way till the end, twice. They were also quite a popular team with a consistent attendance record throughout their time in the USL.
In 2015, the owners and shareholders of the club started drawing up plans to take the franchise to the MLS and become a powerful force in U.S soccer. At first they faced some resistance from the league, but their persistence paid off eventually as they became the twentieth team to join the MLS. Part of their agreement was to have a dedicated soccer stadium for the franchise. Till then, the club would play its games at the Citrus Bowl.
After the club was officially formed, a new crest was designed, featuring a golden lion on a field of purple also featuring the team’s name. That also gave the franchise its nickname, “The Lions.” Adrian Heath was retained as the head coach as he had led them to several trophies over the years. He was, however, provided with a host of quality players that would make the team an instant title challenger in the MLS. The biggest acquisition was that of the popular Brazilian soccer superstar, Kaka, who had won almost every major trophy in world soccer. His arrival to the roster was a major coup for the Orlando City SC and gave everyone associated with the franchise a big lift.
The team played its first game in March, 2015 against fellow MLS newcomers, the New York Football Club. Even though they conceded an early goal and lost a player through a red card offense, Kaka came to the rescue as he scored a sublime free kick to salvage a point with a draw.
That was a decent start for Orlando, considering they were down to ten men as well. They will be looking to build on that as the season progresses. Orlando City SC is a soccer club with big ambitions and if they keep on taking it one step at a time, it shouldn’t be too long before they reach the MLS Summit.
