Oregon State University first fielded a football team in 1893. The Beavers, as they were called, were placed in the I-A division of the NCAA. Before 1892, college sports were not allowed in OSU owing to the directives of the then principal. However, all that changed when the new president of the school John Bloss took over. Ushering in an era of college football, William Bloss who was the president’s son, fielded the first Oregon State football team and also played on it as a quarterback.

The first game that the Beavers participated in was an away game at Albany College.
