Old Dominion Monarchs Cities

Sports in the US have completely different setups when compared to other countries. This is mostly because in almost every major international sport, players are trained in specialized academies or in the lower leagues. The British soccer league system alone has over nine levels, with over a hundred and forty leagues in total, featuring over five thousand clubs. To get to the top, a team or a player will have to advance through each of them before they can make a name for themselves and only the best manage to get to the top most level. In the US however, more importance is given to the development of college sports, with almost every major star having been drafted straight from school.

Polish the crown

One such institution, that has played its part in the development of quite a few superstars, is Old Dominion University. Formed over 85 years ago, it took them some time before they could set up an athletics program that could bring the university some success. They faced quite a few problems along the way, but have managed to do alright in recent years. Now they have eighteen different varsity sports teams for both men and women, who are collectively known as the Monarchs. Their symbol is that of a lion with a crown at its head, taking a swipe at their opponents, with the name of the university underneath it, and like their mascot, their teams are also known for their steely determination.

The Monarchs have managed to win quite a few titles over the years, in a number of different varsity sports. Their most successful side has been their Field Hockey team, which has won a record nine National titles to date, along with 17 regular season conference titles and 15 conference tournament championships. They have additionally won several more titles over the years, and if you want to see them in action for yourself, then here is your chance. Just book your Old Dominion Monarchs tickets and enjoy their thrilling matchups, live from the stands.

Get down on one knee

The university was formed in 1930, and within a year they had also set up a football team. At this time they were merely the Norfolk division of the College of William and Mary, and nobody expected them to have their own team. However, that did not stop their first coach Tommy Scott in doing everything he possibly could to set up a side to challenge all others. They started by playing against small local teams, before facing established sides. Over the next eleven years they gradually improved on the field, yet their off field problems did not, and by 1941 the program had to be scrapped.

After years of attempts, finally in 2009 the football program was reinitiated. They have since been amongst the most consistent sides in college football, and have posted only one losing season record ever since. They have also made it into the NCAA Division one FCS Playoffs twice, making it all the way to the quarterfinals in 2012.

All hail the kings

There are several other varsity sports teams that the Monarchs have enjoyed success with. Their basketball team has made eleven appearances in the NCAA tournament so far and managed to win nine Conference tournament championships, along with six Conference regular season titles. Their baseball team on the other hand has made eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, winning five conference titles and four Conference tournament championships along the way.

The Monarchs have been taking an active part in college sports for quite a few years now, and are expected to the same this year as well. Soon they are scheduled to play a series of games against some of the best opposition in the country, and if you want, then you can be there every step of the way.
