North Dakota State Bisons, popularly referred to as the ‘Thundering Nerd’ are the athletic teams of North Dakota State University that is located in Fargo, North Dakota. Their current logo is a yellow and green bison, and they are famous for their dance team that took first place in Orlando, Florida’s nationals in pom in 2012 and 2013. NDSU’s intercollegiate sport teams compete in Division I of NCAA in all sports. Their best known program is that of their football team, which has won as many as twenty-six conference titles alongside eight national championships, before moving on to 2004’s Division I Championship Subdivision. The University sponsors seven teams each for both men and women in NCAA sanctioned sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, wrestling, and track & field for men; and basketball cross country, soccer, golf, softball, volleyball and track & field for women. North Dakota State Bisons are a member of the prestigious Missouri Valley Football Conference particularly for football, and for all other games they are members of The Summit League. Previously, they had been members of North Central Conference, the United Basketball Conference, and Great West Football Conference, while also playing as an independent. NDSU has been a charter member of Division II of North Central Conference, from where it switched to Division I sports in late 2004. It then continued to play as an independent in all sports in Division I with the exception of football, which it participated in as a member of GWFC. Soon enough, the university was officially announced to be a member of The Summit League in August 2006, and started playing in the conference in July 2007. Prior to these changes, the Bisons football team quitted GWFC and instead joined Missouri Valley Football Conference in March 2007. By the 2008 season, they had become full members of their new conference.
The Bison football team, which has won the national championships of 1990, 1988, 1986, 1985, 1983, 1969, 1968, and 1965, recently won from Sam Houston State in 2012 in FCS National Championship game, gaining the title of 2011 season National Champions. Bisons football games are famous for being a big event in Fargo and its surrounding regions, and are attended by more than eighteen thousand fans on average. The team plays its home games at the spacious Fargodome which has a seating capacity of more than nineteen thousand. In early 2012, the Bisons won NCAA Division I championship a second time in a row.
The wrestling program of the Bisons has brought home four team titles for Division II in 2001, 2000, 1998, and 1988. The team initially qualified for participation in Division I competitions in 2009. It then joined together with six other teams in order to form the Western Wrestling Conference.
