University of North Carolina Greensboro initially started its intercollegiate athletics program during the 1940s. The earlier sports played by the students were golf and tennis. The Spartans were a part of NCAA's Division III during the eighties but slowly moved up the Divisions. By 1991, the UNC Spartans were playing under the Division I tier in the NCAA's Southern Conference and continue to do so. Kim Record serves as the current Athletic Director of the Spartan, who replaced long time Director Nelson E. Bobb in 2009. The Spartans traditional colors are white, gold and blue.
