It was back in 1974 that the head of Hockey Canada and the executive director of the NHL Players' Association, Doug Fisher and Alan Eagleson respectively, decided that an international tournament was required where the best national teams in ice hockey would compete in order to be crowned champions of the world. The first such tournament, named the Canada Cup, took place in 1976 and the hosts managed to win the title in the end, beating the team from Czechoslovakia in the final.
In 1996, the Canada Cup was retired to be replaced by the World Cup of Hockey. This championship featured the teams dubbed the Big Six, which include Canada, Russia, United States, Sweden, Finland, and Czech Republic, along with two other competitors in the form of Germany and Slovakia. The championship has been held only once after its inaugural edition, with the US winning the 1996 edition and Canada lifting the title in 2004.
