This High-A team came to the South Atlantic League in 1961 and their career in the league launched as the Portsmouth-Norfolk Tides. One year in this league and the Portsmouth- Norfolk Tides shifted to the Carolina League and became the Tidewater Tides. For five years the league housed their energies; but with the South Division of the International League taking place the team moved under the Triple-A shell. As the Tidewater Tides the team lasted for more than three decades and won considerable amount of appreciation for their talent and game play. In the year 2002, they became the Norfolk Tides . The team was affiliated with a number of Major league teams in the sixties namely Kansas City A's, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. The longest affiliation of the Tides started in 1969 and ended in 2006; in this affiliation with the New York Mets the Tides enjoyed five Governor’s Cup titles. In 2007 the Tides joined the Baltimore Orioles alongside the Gwinnett Braves, Charlotte Knights and Durham Bulls.

The Tides Ballpark is the beautiful Harbor Park, a sporting facility with a capacity of twelve thousand plus seats. Before the team came to this venue it played at two different stadiums the Lawrence Stadium and then the Met Park. The next season the club marked their presence with a 64-78 record, winning them a second position in the South Division. In 2009 the team began as a top notch minor league baseball team with a score of 34-15. However, the season ended with 71-71 equation. The third season of the Tides reflected improvement, when their 67-77 record led them to stand third in IL South Division.

In the 2011 season the International League saw a 56-87 record, the deepest pit in Norfolk's score card to date.
