North America’s Foremost Professional Hockey Competition

When it comes to professional sports in the Western hemisphere, it doesn’t get much bigger than the National Hockey League (NHL). It is one of the most prestigious sporting competitions in both Canada and the United States. The Stanley Cup, awarded to the winners of the NHL Playoffs every year, is the oldest trophy in professional sports in the region.

One of the biggest stages in the game beckons the finest exponents of the sport to make their mark once again. Wayne Gretzky built records here, Jacques Plante redefined the art of goaltending and Gordie Howe made the world sit up and applaud his finesse as well as grit at this most hallowed of platforms.

The NHL Playoffs are the conclusion of a grueling regular season where the best teams and the biggest players in the game battle it out for a chance to make it big in the postseason and have a shot at lifting the Stanley Cup. Catch your favorite stars in action by getting NHL Stanley Cup tickets.

Beginning in 1917 in Montreal, the NHL consisted of 4 teams which were all based in Canada. Expansion to the United States came in 1924 when the Boston Bruins became the first American side to join the league. Only six teams (often referred to as the “Original Six”) competed from 1942 to 1967 before multiple expansions started taking place.

More than 30 professional hockey franchises from both Canada and the United States are part of the NHL today. All of them compete for the Stanley Cup every year and the right to be called the best hockey team in the land. Close to two dozen different teams have won the Stanley Cup and most of them are still an active part of the NHL.

The Washington Capitals are the current champions while the Montreal Canadiens are the most successful outfit in the history of the competition with 24 wins. In terms of appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals, the Canadiens lead the charts too with more than 30 trips to the showpiece event.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are the second best team in the history of the NHL with 13 wins. They are followed by the Detroit Wings who are the most successful American franchise in the NHL with 11 wins. These 3 are the only NHL sides to have reached double figures in terms of Stanley Cup wins.

Other teams who have lifted the cup multiple times include the Boston Bruins, the Edmonton Oilers,  the Chicago Blackhawks, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders among others. The Penguins and the Blackhawks have been the dominant sides in recent years with 5 wins between them since the turn of the decade.

The Contenders

Defending champions Washington Capitals have already secured their playoff berth and are on course to add the Metropolitan Division Championship to their trophy cabinet. They will be gearing up for a successful defense of their NHL crown. Formidable challenges will be posed by the likes of Presidents’ Trophy winners the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins who have all cemented their spots in the postseason.

Over in the Western Conference, newly-crowned Pacific Division Champions Calgary Flames will be the ones to watch out for as they bid to win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1989. Joining them in the Western Conference playoffs are the San Jose Sharks and the 2018 runners-up Vegas Golden Knights.

The fight for the Central Division Championship will be going down to the wire with the Winnipeg Jets, the St. Louis Blues and the Nashville Predators separated by just a couple of points. All three of them have secured playoff places and will be formidable opponents for any team that they come across. NHL Stanley Cup tickets are on sale now and you need to get yours at the earliest to enjoy your favorite teams striving for the ultimate glory on the ice.
