All About the Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche’s foundations were laid in 1972 in Quebec. Named the Quebec Nordiques, they were a charter franchise of the World Hockey Association (WHA) which was a rival league of the NHL at the time.

The team became a part of the NHL after the 1979 merger of the NHL and the WHA. They played as the Quebec Nordiques from 1979 till 1995. At this point, the franchise was bought by the COMSAT Entertainment Group which moved it to Denver at the beginning of the 1995-96 season and renamed it as the Colorado Avalanche.

Immediate success followed the relocation to Denver with the team lifting the Division title in its first season in the city. But the team’s best came in the postseason. After annexing the Division crown, the Avalanche cruised through the Conference playoffs before sweeping aside the Florida Panthers in 4 straight games to win the Stanley Cup for the first time.

To date, this remains the only instance in the history of the NHL where a team has won a championship in their very first season after moving to a new city. In fact, the Washington Redskins of the NFL are the only other professional sports franchise in North America to have accomplished the same feat. This was also the first time a Denver-based team won a professional sports title.

In total, the Avalanche have 2 Stanley Cups, 9 Division Championships, 2 Conference titles and 2 Presidents’ Trophies to their name.
