Eyes on the prize
Charles Monroe had been studying at the Christ's College in Finchley, England when he first came across the sport of rugby. He was instantly drawn to it and when he returned to his native New Zealand in 1870, he had learned enough to start promoting it around the country. It did not take too long to catch on and the first officially recorded game took place later that same year, between the Nelson Club and the Nelson College.
Within the next decade the game went through a remarkable expansion and in 1879 the Canterbury Rugby Football Union was founded, the first rugby union in the country. Three years later, the New South Wales team became the first international rugby side to visit the country and they played a series of games against provincial sides, as a national team had not been set up as yet. However, only two years later a team had been set up, and they travelled to New South Wales for their first international tour, where they played eight games in total, winning each one.
That incredible success added to rugby’s popularity in New Zealand and as a result the level of players being developed also went up. By 1892 the New Zealand Rugby Football Union had been set up, and the first official national team was formed as well. They played their first official test match in 1903, against their bitter rivals, Australia, and managed to walk away with a victory.
Moving towards victory
The New Zealand national rugby team is considered among the best in the world and it is all down to their supreme performances out on the field. They regularly take part in two major tournaments, the Rugby World Cup and the Tri Nations, which is now known as the Rugby Championship. They made their first appearance at the World Cup in its inaugural edition back in 1987 and managed to win it by beating France in the final. They have since added more titles to their collection, including the last two consecutive rugby World Cups, in 2011 and 2015. They have additionally won thirteen Rugby Championships.
Very soon the New Zealand national rugby team will have to face Ireland on the field. The two sides have faced each other twenty eight times before, with Ireland managing only one win to date. They will have to do something really special this time around to add to that solitary triumph. If you want to see the mighty All Blacks in action, then here is your chance. Just book your New Zealand tickets and enjoy the game, live at the Soldier Field Stadium.
