2017 Season

The Mets saw a disappointing season last year when they failed to enter the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Just two years ago in 2015 they played in the World Series against Kansas City Royals. In 2017, however, the team faced a lot of injuries and sank low on the National League. The season ended with the team’s manager since 2011, Terry Collins, retiring.

One of the highlights of the season was Michael Conforto’s performance. He scored 27 home runs and 20 doubles but unfortunately had to end his season due to a shoulder injury.

Jacob deGrom, the 2014 NL Rookie of the Year, during his presiding stretch of the season won eight consecutive starts. While on April 11 Yoenis Cespedes stunned the audience when he hit three homers in five innings.

History

In late 1960 the Mets franchise was accepted into the NL and awarded to a group headed by Mrs. Joan Payson. They went on to play their first official game in 1962 against the Cardinals in St. Louis.

The Mets won their first World Championship in 1969 when they played against Baltimore and won with a 5-3 score.

An interesting game in the team’s history is the shadow ball game in 1977. The Great Blackout of ’77 caused the team to play using car headlights for illumination.
