About the New York Islanders

The New York Islanders were founded in 1972 by the NHL in order to ensure that the rival league, the World Hockey Association (WHA), couldn’t put a team of their own into the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum located in Uniondale, New York. The NHL wasted no time in formulating a strong roster for the team and three years after they were created, they were in the playoffs every year for fourteen years straight. The team was so strong that they even won four back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in the 1980’s. Between 1980 and 1984, the Islanders also had 19 back-to-back playoff series wins. This accomplishment is something that no other professional sports team throughout history has been able to achieve.

The Islanders also have a number of players that have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame including Pat LaFontaine, Billy Smith, Al Arbour, Denis Potvin, Clark Gillies, Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier, and Bill Torrey.
