The Three Divisions
There are currently three NCAA Lacrosse Championships in the men's category.
NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship
This championship is held to determine the top men's field lacrosse team in this particular division. Before this championship was used as the method of determination, the champion was crowned by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) from 1963 to 1970, based on regular season records. As of 2016, 46 NCAA tournaments have been held, with a total of ten teams winning the title. Only seven unseeded teams have ever made it to the championship game, and only ten unseeded teams have managed to reach the semi-finals. Johns Hopkins has appeared in all of the tournaments except two. The 2016 winner, North Carolina, was the first unseeded team to win this national title. Syracuse has won ten titles over the years, with Johns Hopkins coming in at number two with nine titles. Other teams that have managed to win this title include Princeton, Virginia, North Carolina, Cornell, Duke, Maryland, Denver, and Loyola.
NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse Championship
This is the annual championship organized by the NCAA for teams competing in Division II of men's lacrosse. After the establishment of a Division I institution by the NCAA in 1971, a "small college" tournament was added for all schools that were not in Division I by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. This continued for two years before combined formal NCAA Division II and III tournaments were established. In 1979, the divisional championships were separated, and the Division II tournament was put on hold for twelve years between the 1981 and 1993 seasons before being resumed. Currently, there are eight teams in Division II, and the most recent champions were Le Moyne. The TV partners for this Division are ESPN and CBS College Sports Network. The team with the most championships is Adelphi, with seven wins out of eleven appearances. The second most successful team in this Division is Le Moyne, with five wins out of nine appearances, followed by Limestone with four wins out of ten appearances. Other teams that have managed victories in this tournament include New York Tech, C W Post, Hobart, Mercyhurst, Dowling, UMBC, Springfield, Roanoke, Cortland State, and Towson State.
NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship
The NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship finals and semi-finals are held in National Football League stadiums and are some of the most attended NCAA events. Founded in 1980, the tournament currently has 224 teams competing, with the most recent champions being Salisbury. The TV partners are ESPN and CBS College Sports Network. Hobart has the most wins, with 13 out of 14 appearances, followed by Salisbury (State) with 11 wins in 16 appearances, and Middlebury with 3 wins in 6 appearances. Other teams such as Nazareth, Tufts, SUNY Cortland, Washington College, and Stevenson have also had their fair share of victories over the tournament's history.
