A Look at History
The National Basketball Association was incepted way back in the year 1949. It was formed as a result of the merger between the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America. The BAA lasted for three seasons only and interestingly enough, the NBA recognizes those three campaigns as its own.
The BAA champion in those three seasons crowned the new champion after a best-of-seven series too but the format was a bit different. The first two seasons, 1947 and 1948, saw the champions of the Eastern and the Western divisions take on each other in seven games to determine who would go on to the Championship series. As for the other side, the four runner-up had to play best-of-three series to determine who would play for the championship.
The second placed sides took on each other in a series and the two third placed sides did the same. The winner of those two series then squared-off to see who would advance to the championship round.
The New Playoff Format (Last BAA Season)
In 1949, the format of the previous two seasons was scrapped and a new one was put in place. This new format was close to what is being used by the NBA today. The new playoffs playing stipulations were easier to understand as the Eastern teams played each other whereas the Western sides took on other Western sides too.
Now four teams from each division made it to the playoffs. There were two rounds of best-of-three series and the winners then made it to the best-of-seven championship series. This idea was adopted by the NBA and while changes have been made to the format since then, the overall premise of East Vs West has remained intact.
The Current NBA Playoff Format
The current NBA playoff format was approved in the year 2015 and was to be used for the NBA playoffs of 2016. It was decided that eight sides each from the East and the West conferences will qualify for the playoffs. Those teams were to be decided as per their simple win-loss record through the regular season. New formula was decided for the tie-break too. It was agreed upon that the head-to-head record would be the first tie-breaker whereas the division championship would be the second tie-breaker.
The standings determine the bracket which is fixed as soon as the postseason begins. The first round is also known as the conference quarterfinals and it consists of four match-ups for each conference. The four winners then make it to the next round, the conference semifinals. The two winners from those games then take on each other in the conference finals. The winners of those match-ups from the East and the West advance to the NBA Finals.
