History of the Franchise

In 1995, there was talk of bringing hockey to Nashville. The city even offered a $20 million bonus to any team that would relocate to Nashville. Even though the New Jersey Devils got close to taking the deal, they did not eventually relocate. After this attempt, Gary Bettman, the NHL Commissioner decided to consider Nashville in an upcoming expansion. It was finally in the January of 1997 that a group led by a Wisconsin businessman, Craig Leipold, put in a request for an expansion franchise in Nashville. The Nashville team that formed subsequently played its first season in 1998.

The saber-toothed cat was chosen as the franchise’s new logo and Barry Trotz was named the first head coach. The Predators first hit the ice in October of 1998 in a game against the Florida Panthers that they lost 1-0. Only three nights later, the team bagged their first win, against the Carolina Hurricanes, beating them 3-2.

The Nashville Predators started out weak, finishing second-last in the first two seasons of their existence.
