The Montreal Impact is a Canadian pro soccer team, a member of Major League Soccer. Founded in 2010, it is the youngest franchise in the MLS but has emerged as one of the most formidable franchises in a short amount of time. Its home stadium is the Saputo Stadium, located in Montreal. It is a twenty thousand plus capacity stadium and during soccer match seasons, Montreal Impact tickets sell like hot cakes. The franchise is owned by Joey Saputo with Marco Schallibaum as the head coach. The official team colors of this MLS franchise are white, blue and black.
Founded in 2010, the Montreal Impact began playing in the MLS in 2012. It is the league’s nineteenth franchise to date and the third Canadian soccer team to join Major League Soccer. Founding of the franchise was a matter of discussion way back in 2007, particularly with the building of the Saputo Stadium. Toronto FC, owners of a Canadian exclusivity deal for the MLS agreed for the franchise to join the MLS, from lower soccer divisions. Joey Saputo, together with George Gillett, the renowned owner of Liverpool FC in the UK and the Montreal Canadians, were the first two owners of the franchise.
In 2008, the owners group bid for a place on the MLS but were unable to attain it. In 2009, following Vancouver city’s successful entry into the MLS, the group applied again and in 2010, the franchise became the nineteenth soccer team to join the MLS with the Saputo family as the owners. In 2011, Bank of Montreal became the jersey and lead sponsor of the team. Their first game was against the Vancouver Whitecaps and then played at the Olympic Stadium against the Chicago Fire, resulting in a 1-1 score. This was one of the main highlights of the year, attracting over fifty eight thousand spectators to the stadium, creating a record for the largest attendance in a soccer match in Montreal.
The Montreal Impact again broke the attendance record when their game with the Los Angeles Galaxy attracted over sixty thousand spectators, resulting in the largest attendance in a soccer game in Canada. In 2013, the team emerged victorious in the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic, after defeating the Columbus Crew in the finals. Having defeated MLS veterans, the franchise proved that it was a tough team, the MLS underdog. The team went on to win the Canadian Championship trophy in 2013, and then won the Voyageurs Cup.
This soccer team has a fierce rivalry with the Toronto FC, since both are located in the largest Canadian cities. Traditionally, soccer teams from the two cities having been facing each other for more than forty years, a rivalry that continues to date, after both teams entered the MLS. They have also founded in the Montreal Impact Academy, a development system and youth academy with teams that play in the Canadian Soccer League.
Montreal Impact is a team that has won the Canadian Championship, the Voyageurs Cup and the Walt Disney Pro Soccer Classic, all in 2013 despite debuting in the MLS in 2012. In short, it is a team you would love to watch live in action. So get your Montreal Impact Season Tickets in time.
