About the Montreal Alouettes
The Montreal Alouettes were originally founded in 1946 and were very dominant in their early years. Between 1946 and 1981, the team won four Grey Cups. After the 1981 season, the team collapsed in 1982. They were soon reconstituted under new management and ownership and were renamed the Montreal Concordes. In 1987, the team folded again and afterwards there was a nine year hiatus for CFL football in Montreal.
In 1996, the present day Montreal Alouettes were established by the owners of the Baltimore Stallions. The Stallions were disbanding at the same time so many of their old players signed on to the new Alouettes team and made up their new roster.
Today, the Montreal Alouettes play all of their home games at the Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.
The last time the Alouettes won the Grey Cup was in 2010. The team’s colors are red, blue, silver and white.
Facts about the Montreal Alouettes
The Montreal Alouettes, since their reestablishment in 1996, have become one of the most successful teams in the CFL. The present incarnation of the team is undoubtedly the most successful and dynamic one as compared to its previous incarnations.
In total, the Alouettes, in all of its incarnations, have won 7 Grey Cups.
The team also had the longest active playoff streak in the CFL from 1996 to 2014. During that time, the Alouettes only missed the playoffs two times. The streak only came to an end as early as 2015.
They have also hosted a playoff game every year with the exception of 2001, 2007, 2013, 2015, and 2016. Their last two seasons marked the first time that the Alouettes missed the playoffs in consecutive years since they were reestablished in the CFL.
Another interesting fact about the Alouettes is that they are the only team in the CFL to have non-Canadian ownership. The American investment banker Robert Wetenhall is the current owner of the team and before him, Jim Popp was the team’s general manager and head coach.
Top Players on the Alouettes
The Montreal Alouettes have had an impressive roster of talent over the years. These players have been the reason that the team has done so well since it was reestablished in the CFL.
Some of those players include Mike Pringle, the running back who played with the Alouettes from their reestablishment to 2002. He is the CRLK career leader in rushing yards and is regarded as the greatest running back in CFL history. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2008 in the first year that he became eligible.
Another outstanding player for the Alouettes has been quarterback Anthony Calvillo. He is the all-time passing yards leader in professional football and first in the all-time CFL passing yards rankings. After announcing his retirement in 2014, he has been the quarterback coach for the Alouettes.
Other top players for the Alouettes have included George Dixon, Herb Trawick, Pierre Desjardins, Peter Dalla Riva, Hal Patterson, Junior Ah You, Virgil Wagner, Ben Cahoon, and Sam Etcheverry. All of these players have had their numbers retired.
