Although very different in rules and method of play, the beginnings of football are placed in rugby according to football historians and researchers. However, there are many similarities between football and rugby too. Rugby, an English game, began play at the famous Rugby Boys’ School in England during the early 1800s. Another similar game to which American football can trace its roots to is soccer, which also emerged in the English origin during the 1820s.

Simultaneously, a game called ‘ballown’ was started by a group of students at Princeton. Whereas, the first acknowledged intercollegiate football game was played in New Brunswick, New Jersey during 1869. It was a match between Princeton and Rutgers Universities with 25 players on each side, and no referee or sports official was present. It was the 1870s when intercollegiate teams got actively involved in the sport; each following different rules and regulations. This resulted in the formation of Intercollegiate Football Association that formalized the set of rules for this sport.

The man behind changing the game from a variation of rugby into a unique sport was Walter Camp, also recognized as the "Father of American Football". He not only outlined a set of rules of the game but also helped I become popular across the nation by publishing frequent articles in publications such as Harper's Weekly and Collier's Weekly. He also chose the first College Football All-America Team.

During the latter half of the 19th century, college football not only became more popular, but also grew to be increasingly violent. Thus, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was formed. New rules governing the sport were set. In addition, NCAA also decided for the college athletes to not get salaries, unlike professionals. However, many receive athletic scholarship and financial aid from the university.

The College football teams are categorized into divisions and conferences by NCAA, on the basis of size, location, and other qualifications. Throughout the year, these teams contend each other in different championships. Division I (FCS), Division II and Division III are held by NCAA; whereas, the highest division to hold a playoff tournament to determine the champion is the FCS.
The most celebrated championship of college football is the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). Two teams contend in the BCS and whoever wins becomes the national champion. The NCAA does not support a tournament for BCS and belonging to the Division I FBS only take part in this format and the Bowl Games that it hosts.

Nowadays, due to the thrill and excitement of the game, college football is celebrated widely across the United States of America. Thousands of colleges/universities play the sport in different leagues of NCAA. Fans across the country are always looking forward for their favorite game to take place.
