The football team from the University of Memphis first stepped on to the field in 1912. At that time, the team represented West Tennessee State College which was later renamed to University of Memphis. The Memphis Tigers are placed in the American Athletic Conference and their football team participates in the Football subdivision of NCAA division I.

Memphis Tigers Coaches

Some of the biggest names in college football have coached Memphis Tiger teams over the years, starting with Clyde Wilson in 1912 that was in charge of the first team. The next coach of note was Lester Barnard who led the Tigers to an impressive win-loss-draw record of 5-2-2 in 1922. The first College Football Hall of Famer to have coached a Tigers team was Allyn McKeen who was at the helm of affairs from 1937 to 1938. During that time, his Tigers team won 13 games losing only 6. In his second year, he led the Tigers to an undefeated season with 10 wins. There was an absence of two years when University of Memphis did not field a football team from 1943-45 due to the ongoing World War II.

The Glorious Years

The Tigers had a renaissance during the tenure of Bill Murphy as head coach which stretched from 1958 to 1971. During these fourteen years the Memphis team was virtually unstoppable, winning 91 games compared to only 44 losses and 1 draw. The Memphis team of 1963 etched its name into college football folklore when it went undefeated. In doing so, it became the second Memphis Tigers team in a quarter of a century to achieve the feat. Bill Murphy was recognized for this achievement and given the award for the ‘National Coach of the Year’.
