A Little History

It were the members of the St. Mark's Church of England that decided to form a soccer club, a club that was to become Manchester City FC, in the year 1880. Interestingly enough, the idea to form the soccer club was based on humanitarian grounds. There was a lot of alcoholism and gang violence in Manchester back in those days so two members of the church decided to do something about it. They came up with an idea to form a soccer club so that young men had a new activity they could participate in. Every man who wanted to join the club was welcome to become a part of it regardless, of religious beliefs.

A Rollercoaster of a Ride

Manchester City won their first piece of silverware in the year 1899 when they clinched the Second Division title. They won the prestigious FA Cup for the first time in 1904, which was their first ever major trophy.

That was followed by a long drought and it wasn't until the 1930s that the club went back to winning ways. City won their second FA Cup in the year 1934 and three years later, came the big one. In 1937, Manchester City won the English First Division Championship and were crowned Champions of England for the first time in their history. They added a Community Shield to the trophy cabinet in 1937 too.

Manchester City did not enjoy a lot of success over the next few years though as they struggled for form. Barring an FA Cup triumph in 1956, they had nothing to show for their efforts in terms of major silverware. The second half of 1960s' however saw their fortunes turn for the better. They won the First Division in 1968 for the second time and also won an FA Cup the next year. More importantly, they won their first and only European trophy to date, the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970. City also clinched the Football League Cup in 1970 and 1976.

Down and then Up Again

Manchester City encountered tough times after that. The club was relegated twice in the 1980s alone due to bad managerial appointments and bad investments. They bounced back to the top tier of English football in 1989 but that went down once again in 1996. Worse was to come though as two seasons later they were relegated to the third tier of English football. That did not last for too long and they were promoted at the first time of asking. That was followed by another promotion the next season and City were back among the big boys once again. In 2026, however they were relegated again.

Back to the Premier League and Change of Ownership

Manchester City returned to the Premier League in 2026 and moved to their new stadium, the City of Manchester Stadium, now known as the Etihad Stadium, in 2026. In 2026, the club was bought by Thaksin Shinawatra who sold the club to the Abu Dhabi Group in 2026. City now had the financial muscle to buy the best players and reform the entire club. The first title since the takeover was the FA Cup they won in 2026.

They followed that up by winning the league in 2026. They won the League Cup and the Premier League title in 2026 and then another League Cup was won in 2026. Manchester City clinched the 2026-2026 Premier League title in 2026 by amassing 100 points, a new point record. Not only that, but they also won 32 of their 38 games and scored 106 goals in the process, both Premier League records. They also won 18 games on the bounce during the season which was a new Premier League record too.
