The Los Angeles Rams were incepted in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams. They won their maiden league title in 1945 before starting their journey as the Los Angeles Rams in 1946. They clinched another NFL Championship in 1951. The franchise played as Los Angeles Rams from 1946 to 1994 and apart from the NFL Championship win in 1951, they also got their hands on four conference titles and twelve division crowns.
The franchise then relocated to St. Louis and became the St. Louis Rams from 1995 onwards. They lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy by winning the Super Bowl in 1999. In St. Louis, the Rams won two conference championships and three division titles too. The Rams then once again moved to Los Angeles to start playing as the Los Angeles Rams from 2016 onwards. They have clinched two conference championships, three division titles and a Super Bowl since then.

The 49ers and Rams have had a historical rivalry, dating back to the 70s. The 1980s especially can be considered the peak of this rivalry because throughout this decade the divisional rivals would take turns at the top of the NFC West. After moving back to Los Angeles, the Rams have become west coast rivals to San Francisco yet again, and this has sparked a great deal of competitiveness among their fans. As of September 26, 2022, the Rams have played the San Francisco 49ers on 114 occasions in the Super Bowl era during the regular season. The 49ers lead the head-to-head record 61-51-2. They have also faced off twice in the postseason with both sides racking up one win apiece.
