The arrival of Los Angeles FC on the MLS landscape is a result of extreme hard work and dedication by everyone associated with the franchise. Now it is up to the team to show its mettle out there on the soccer field.
The Background
It was on October 30, 2014 that the MLS rewarded the city of Los Angeles the expansion status. Chivas USA, a team that was based in LA had dissolved just three days earlier and the MLS did not waste any time in giving the city a new side. They were now to share the market with the MLS juggernaut, the Los Angeles Galaxy.
On May 8, 2015, the management team announced plans for the contraction of a new stadium for the Los Angeles FC. The new stadium was to have a seating capacity of 22,000 and was to replace the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena which was located right next to the famous LA Memorial Coliseum. In September of the same year it was announced that the official name of the franchise will be Los Angeles FC.
Things Begin to Roll
LAFC needed to build a strong management team to get everything up and running. The first step was to appoint VP of Soccer Operations, John Thorrington. Thorrington used to be a youth team player at European giants, Manchester United before he made the move to Germany to sign for Bayer Leverkusen. He returned to England to play for Huddersfield Town and Grimsby Town. He then signed for the Chicago Fire in the year 2005. Thorrington won four international caps for the United States national soccer side.
The Los Angeles FC then unveiled their crest and logo on January 7, 2016. The club then began its youth setup on February 1st. On May 6, 2016, the LA City Council officially approved the construction of the LAFC Stadium. The team's fans, owners and officials all joined hands and showed up at the Los Angeles City Hall that day in support of the construction of the new stadium.
LAFC announced the appointment of Bob Bradley as the head coach in July of 2017. He began to work on signing players with Thorrington and signed Carlos Vela became the first player to sign for the club on August 11, 2017.
The Los Angeles FC Start Play
The Los Angeles FC took to the soccer field for the first time on March 4, 2018 for an encounter with the Seattle Sounders FC. They won the clash 1-0 at the CenturyLink Field with Diego Rossi becoming the first goal scorer in the club's history. Carlos Vela provided the assist.
They won their next game against Real Salt Lake 5-1. The LAFC then went into the LA Derby with the Galaxy on March 31, 2018. They raced into a 3-0 lead before Galaxy introduced their latest signing, the legendary Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The big Swede helped his team mount a stunning comeback and win the game 4-3 to hand LAFC their first loss.
The Banc of California Stadium
The Los Angeles FC play their home games at the Banc of California Stadium. The management team estimated that it would cost around two hundred and fifty million dollars to build the stadium. The eventual cost came to three hundred and fifty million dollars.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 23, 2016 and it was on that same day that the club announced that the naming rights of the stadium were sold to Banc of California for one hundred million dollars. The agreement was for fifteen years. Since it was to be built in place of the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, its demolition began shortly afterwards. The stunning new venue is to open its doors for the first time on April 29, 2018.
There is plenty to look forward to for LAFC fans this season. They have a good decent squad and the support of the fans will count for a lot considering this is their first ever season in the MLS. If you are one of their supporters, then book your Los Angeles FC tickets and watch them live.
