About the Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers were founded during the summer of 1959. A year later, they joined and began play in the old American Football League (AFL) as one of its charter members. However, after just one season, the franchise relocated to San Diego and became known as the San Diego Chargers.
After the move to America’s Finest City, the Chargers reached the AFL championship game four times in five seasons. They won their maiden league title in 1963 after decimating the Boston Patriots 51-10 in the decider.
Following the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Chargers became a part of the new NFL’s American Football Conference (AFC). During their time in San Diego, the Balboa Stadium and the SDCCU Stadium served as the Chargers’ home arenas.
After a long association with San Diego that lasted more than 50 years, the Chargers returned to the city where it all started in 2017. They have since played their home games at the Dignity Health Sports Park.
A new home arena is currently being constructed for the Chargers. Known as the Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park, it is expected to see the light of day in 2020.In terms of on-field success, the LA Chargers have won 15 Division titles and 1 Conference crown.
