Kentucky Oaks Cities
Female horses below four years of age are technically referred to as fillies, and their races are arranged frequently across the globe. Louisville, Kentucky hosts such a race every year as a Grade I stakes race, where only three years old thoroughbred fillies are eligible to participate. Race track is at Churchill Downs, and is about one and a half miles (1811 meter) long. The history of this race dates back to 1875 when the current venue for this race used to be called as Louisville Jockey Club. Another associated event that takes place every year at Kentucky is the Kentucky Derby, and Kentucky Oaks is organized on the Friday before Derby each year. It is claimed that the two races are the oldest sporting events that have been running continuously since their inception and at their original site.
Kentucky Oaks was founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. in collaboration with Clark Handicap, Kentucky Derby and Falls City Handicap. The inspiration for Kentucky Oaks came from British Epsom Oaks. First race that was organized at Kentucky Oaks was won by the horse named Vinaigrette, and $1,175 was given as the prize money. Ever since, the race is organized on an annual basis.
The race is one of the most popular sporting events in the United States. The attendance has gone above a hundred thousand people in recent years that used to be around 50,000 in 1980s. In 1989 it was estimated that about 67,000 people attended the event. According to a recent estimate the number of spectators coming to see Kentucky Derby is third highest in the continent, and is most of the times higher than the visitors that attend other stakes races like Breeders’ cup and Belmont Stakes.
The Kentucky Oaks is often referred to simply as Oaks by the local population, and is generally considered as a local event. The area where Churchill Downs is located is often called as Kentuckiana, as it is located at the junction of southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. The area located inside the race tracks is occupied by vendors selling alcoholic beverages, boardwalk games and other attraction for visitors. It is frequently observed that visitors from nearby localities try and bring in their own alcohol, considering the fact that the one sold at the venue is over priced, and the management has prohibited the visitors to bring in their own alcohol. At the venue both local visitors and those coming from far off places enjoy tourist attractions that are set up apart from the main racing event.
The local schools and businesses generally do not observe the Kentucky Oaks as an official holiday, in spite of the fact that it is one of the leading events of the area attracting such a huge number of visitors and promoting tourism. The reason for this is thought to be the gambling aspect of the event that keeps local schools from openly announcing it as a holiday.
There are many traditions associated with the Kentucky Oaks event, like a garland of lilies for the winner horse, often referred to as Lillies for the Fillies, and a silver Kentucky Oaks trophy for the winning person. Currently the prize money is worth $500,000. With beautiful and elegant thoroughbred fillies taking part in this auspicious occasion, Kentucky Oaks Tickets offer an exciting experience that any person having a taste for good derby races and elegant horses would love to be a part of.
