Get to Know the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs were set up in 1960 as the Dallas Texans. They were one of the charter franchises of the old American Football League (AFL). Three years later, however, the team relocated to Kansas City and took the name Kansas City Chiefs.

A highly popular franchise with a large fan base, the Chiefs have a collective brand value of more than $2 billion. Following the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, they became a part of the American Football Conference (AFC) West Division.

In the decade prior to the merger, the Chiefs won the AFL championship on three occasions. A third of these came in 1969. This was also the year they won their maiden Super Bowl crown. After clinching the AFL Championship against the Oakland Raiders, the Chiefs prevailed over the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings to secure their first Super Bowl win.

Exploits

Since the 1970 merger, the Chiefs have won the AFC West Division title 9 times. In total, they have won 11 Divisional championships in the old AFL and NFL combined. The side from the City of Fountains has a number of records to its name.

Their 1969 Super Bowl triumph was only the second instance of an AFL team beating an NFL outfit in the old AFL-NFL World Championship Game. With that appearance a year before the big merger, the Chiefs also became the first AFL side to appear in more than one Super Bowl.
