There aren’t too many big names in club soccer anywhere in the world than Juventus FC. The Old Lady is in a league of its own when it comes to winning titles. Yes, they have had to face some adversities but this is a side that knows how to overcome every obstacle that comes its way.
The formation
Juventus FC trace their roots back to November 1, 1897 when it was formed as the Sport-Club Juventus. A few students from the Massimo D’Azeglio Lyceum School, which was based in Turin, were responsible for the club’s inception. The name was changed to Foot-Ball Club Juventus just two years afterwards. Juventus became part of the Italian Football Championship in 1900 and it wasn’t long before the side had begun to dominate Italian soccer.
A winning legacy
Juventus FC were crowned champions of Italy for the first time in the year 1905. A two decade drought then came their way before they won another league title in 1926. Juventus FC then went on to clinch another five league titles in as many years between 1931 and 1935.
The next decade and a half was not very productive for the club though as they failed to win any league titles. They got their hands on three league titles during the 1950s and then repeated the feat during the 1960s as well. That was followed by five more league championships during the 1970s.
European quest
Juventus FC had become one of the most formidable teams in Italian soccer. The time had come for them to make their mark on the European stage as well. Juventus did just that but winning their first European trophy, the UEFA Cup (Now known as the UEFA Europa League) in the year 1977. The European jinx had been broken and the club was about to usher in arguably its most glorious era in history.
Domestic and European dominance
Juventus FC began the 1980s by winning two Serie A titles in 1980 and 1982. That was followed by a Coppa Italia in 1983. Juventus FC then clinched the league title in 1984 and ended the season by winning a UEFA Cup Winners Cup and the European Super Cup to their collection.
Juventus FC had won almost every trophy available on the domestic and European front till then but the biggest one of them all, the European Cup had eluded them. That all changed in 1985. They went up against Liverpool FC, the defending champions of Europe. In a very close final, Juventus FC triumphed 1-0 to lift their first ever European Cup.
They finished the decade by winning another league title in 1986.
The glorious 90s
Juventus FC continued its dominance in the next decade too. They won a Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup in 1990. That was followed by another UEFA Cup in 1993. Juventus then clinched another league title and a Coppa Italia in 1995. They then went one step further and added a second European Cup to their collection by winning the UEFA Champions League in 1996. They also won the UEFA Super Cup that year. The decade ended with Juventus clinching two more league titles in 1997 and 1998.
Calciopoli and return to the Serie A
Juventus won two Serie A titles in 2002 and 2003. Those were followed by another two league titles in 2005 and 2006. The last two championships were taken away from the club when it was implicated in the Calciopoli scandal. Juventus were also demoted to Serie B for the first time in their history.
A lot of big name players jumped ship but legends like Gianluigi Buffon, Alessandro Del Piero, Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet stayed put and helped the team bounce back to Serie A at the first time of asking. A few managers were brought in to put Juventus back on track but without much success.
That changed with the arrival of former player, Antonio Conte as the manager in 2011. He won three successive league titles with Juventus FC in 2012, 2013 and 2014 before leaving to take up the job of the Italian national team manager. He was replaced by former AC Milan boss, Massimiliano Allegri, who has won two straight Serie A titles with the a club and is close to adding another one to the trophy cabinet.
Juventus FC is going through a great phase. They are many people’s pick to win the Champions League as well this season. Book your Juventus FC tickets and watch the Old Lady play live.
