The Jackson State Tigers have been the proud flag-bearers of the Jackson State University’s football program. They were established in 1911 by John Pinkett who also served as the side’s first head coach.

Some other coaches who played a major role in shaping Jackson State University’s football program in its years of infancy include Jubie Bragg, Belford Lawson Jr., John H. Young, Earnest Richards and Charles Clark.

Former Jackson State University president Dr. Zachary T. Hubert laid the foundations of the college’s athletics program during the early 1900s. Hubert was the first African-American president of the school. He set about developing the athletics program soon after assuming office.

Today, the Jackson State University (JSU) has one of the most storied football programs in the nation. In 1958, the Jackson State Tigers joined the SWAC, the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Soon afterwards, the JSU’s football program gained national prominence and the Jackson State Tigers became one of the most recognizable college football sides in the United States.

They are considered a powerhouse among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The 16 conference crowns (SWAC) won by the Jackson State Tigers constitute 26% of the total championships to date.

Moreover, 93 professional football players have been produced by JSU till now. These include 4 NFL Hall of Fame inductees. There are just thirteen college football outfits in the country (at any level) that have produced a greater number of NFL Hall of Famers than the Jackson State Tigers.

Major Rivalries

The Jackson State Tigers have a number of historical rivalries. Top among them is the enmity with the Alcorn State Braves (Alcorn State University). The two teams have played each other more than 80 times since the 1920s.

Many of the biggest names in college football have featured in these encounters between the Tigers and the Braves. The annual game between the two sides, dubbed “The Soul Bowl,” is always a very intense affair.

Another major rivalry of the Jackson State Tigers is with the Southern Jaguars (Southern University). The annual game between the two is affectionately known as “The BoomBox Classic.” It is also popular because of the battle between the marching bands of both schools.
