Inter Miami CF: A Brainchild of One of the Greats of the Game

Back in 2012, the MLS had announced its intention to grant an expansion side to Miami. Not since the old Miami Fusion went bust after the 2001 season had The Magic City been home to a pro soccer franchise.

Manchester United legend David Beckham, who spent five years in the MLS as a player for the LA Galaxy (2007-2012), had received the option to buy an expansion franchise when he first joined the five-time MLS Cup winners. All through his stint in the league, the former England captain had been enamored by the league’s potential and was keen on the idea of owning a team.   

So, when Becks hanged up his boots in 2013, the MLS held preliminary discussions with his representatives. A number of cities were identified as expansion targets. In 2014, Beckham exercised his option to buy and decided upon Miami as the home of his new soccer team. His investment group began negotiations with the city of Miami as well as the MLS to finalize the arrangement.

In 2018, the MLS formally announced the awarding of an expansion franchise in Miami to Beckham’s Miami Beckham United group. Thus, Inter Miami became the 25^th side in the league with its debut set for the 2020 campaign. Inter Miami CF Home Arena

The newly-constructed Inter Miami CF Stadium will serve as the temporary home field of the fledgling MLS franchise. Inter Miami CF will play in this 18,000-seater arena in Fort Lauderdale until work is completed on the Miami Freedom Park in Miami. The soccer-specific facility is expected to open in 2022.

Former Uruguay international Diego Alonso is the current head coach of Inter Miami CF. He has previously been in-charge of Mexican side C.F. Monterrey. Veteran American goalkeeper Luis Robles is the team captain. Other prominent players on the roster include the Argentinian trio Nicolás Figal, Matías Pellegrini and Julián Carranza along with Panama captain Román Torres, the man responsible for taking his nation to their first FIFA World Cup adventure in 2018.
