History of Impact Wrestling

Impact Wrestling, formerly known as Total Nonstop Action or TNA, is an American professional wrestling promotion founded by Jeff and Jerry Jarrett in 2002. The company is based in Nashville, Tennessee and broadcasts its weekly programming on AXS TV and Twitch. It has been one of the major wrestling promotions in North America for much of its existence.

Early Years (2002-2008)

Impact Wrestling debuted on June 19th, 2002 with weekly episodes taped at the Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. In 2004, they began a monthly pay-per-view series called TNA Pay-Per-Views that ran until October 2007 when they decided to move to a larger scale pay-per-view format. During this period, they also began airing their “TNA Xplosion” show on Fox Sports Net as well as syndicated television programs such as “TNA iMPACT!” and “TNA Reaction” on SpikeTV.

Their first major breakthrough came when they established a working relationship with WWE in 2006 which saw them receive access to WWE's talent pool for cross promotion purposes. This led to some high profile wrestlers such as AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels appearing on TNA shows throughout 2006 and 2007. During this period the company also signed deals with Ring of Honor and Pro Wrestling Noah to bring foreign talent into TNA shows.

Expansion (2008-2015)

In 2008, they left Universal Studios and relocated their headquarters to Nashville Tennessee while continuing their weekly episodes at different venues around the US including Las Vegas Nevada, San Antonio Texas and Atlanta Georgia. Later that year they launched their own online subscription channel called “TNA On Demand” which offered live streaming video of all their events along with archived matches from past events.

During this time period Impact Wrestling entered into several key partnerships with various companies including MTV2 which aired a weekly episode titled "Impact Wrestling" from 2011 till 2012 before returning back to SpikeTV later that year. They would eventually move onto Destination America in 2015 where the show received its highest ratings yet under the new name of "IMPACT WRESTLING".

Rebranding & Modern Era (2016 - Present)

In early 2016 Impact Wrestling rebranded itself from “Total Nonstop Action” to simply “Impact Wrestling” while adopting a more contemporary presentation style that showcased pyrotechnics during entrances, an updated logo design and modern production techniques.

During this time period they also began broadcasting monthly pay-per-views via traditional domestic cable providers as well as internationally through international distribution deals with Fight Network in Europe, G+ in Asia and Fightbox HD in Latin America among others leading up to present day where it currently broadcasts its flagship series "IMPACT!" every Tuesday night on AXS TV while airing PPV events sporadically throughout the year.

Christian Cage vs Rhino: At No Surrender 2006, Christian Cage defended his NWA World Heavyweight Title against Rhino in one of the most brutal matches seen on Spike TV up to that point in time. With both men unleashing their inner animal during this historic encounter it was Rhino who ultimately emerged victorious becoming only the third man to hold both the NWA World Heavyweight Championship belt and TNA World Heavyweight Championship belt simultaneously after Jeff Jarrett had done it earlier that year.

Bobby Roode & James Storm vs LAX: After LAX lost their titles to Beer Money Inc (Bobby Roode & James Storm) at Sacrifice 2008 they got a rematch - an Ultimate X Match - at Hard Justice 2008 which went down as one of TNA’s best tag team matches ever seen on PPV up. It earned him the triple crown status within Impact Wrestling making him only fifth Triple Crown champion within its history.

Gail Kim Vs Awesome Kong Steel Cage Match: At Lockdown 2008, Gail Kim and Awesome Kong competed against each other inside a steel cage match which ended up being hailed by numerous critics as one of TNA’s greatest women’s matches ever. The match featured some highly innovative maneuvers such as Kim diving off the top rope onto Kong while she was still trapped inside the steel cage thus ending up winning her first Knockouts championship title belt since returning back to the company few months earlier.
