Fighting Illini

The Fighting Illini started playing in 1890 and have a long and storied football tradition. The team won their first national championship in 1914 under legendary coach Bob Zuppke, who would lead them to three more championships in ‘19, ‘23 and ‘27. The team won their last national title in 1951 under coach Ray Elliot. In 1947 Ray Elliot led the team to their first ever Bowl victory, as the Illini defeated the UCLA Bruins in the 1947 Rose Bowl.

Currently the team is coached by Bill Cubit, who is the interim Head Coach, following the dismissal of Tim Beckman last season.
