The Howard University itself is a private chartered university that is known for its importance in black history. It has received the "Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education" which is granted to universities that carry out important research. Although it was established in 1867, the institution has been known for its non segregation values, providing equal opportunity to all races and sexes. They provide an undergraduate program and schools in business, medicine, law, pharmacy and dentistry.

Students here participate in all sorts of activities including a mock trial which takes place around April every year. The Howard University team was the first ever to win two consecutive championships in the same year. Since then, they have been listed in the top 10 teams who are always the ones to watch each year. Other than that, another tradition at the campus is that of Greek Letter organizations. These are the fraternities that stress upon the different qualifications a student should work on to make their impact in a social setting, making their community a better place to live in. For example, the "Phi Sigma Pi" is one where the members stress upon the importance of leadership as well as academic achievement. At the same time, these Greek Letter organizations can have ethnic or multicultural values. These kinds have always been criticized because on the one hand they hold appreciation for minority groups to have representation, but at the same time, such entities emphasize the importance of equal opportunity.

Their marching band is also quite good, competing in nationwide competitions. Their performance at halftime shows are always enjoyed by the audiences. The upcoming football matches are sure to cause a stir in the months to come. In the past, the football team has been home to names such as Doug Porter and Willie Jeffries.
