Grambling State Tigers Basketball
The Grambling State Tigers basketball team made history in 1961 when they won the NAIA National championship tournament. In beating Georgetown College (KY), they became the first and only college basketball team in the state of Louisiana to win a national basketball championship.
They established themselves as fierce contenders in the world of college basketball. In the year that followed their historic victory, they made it to the Final Four in the NAIA several times. In 1963, they placed 3rd. Then, they repeated that feat again in 1966 when they beat both Fort Hays State (KS) and Norfolk State (VA) respectively.
Between 1959 and 1971, the Grambling State Tigers would appear in the NAIA National Tournament eight times. They would establish a NAIA National Tournament record of 19–7. However, the Grambling State Tigers have yet to play in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.
The 2012-13 season was particularly bad for the team. During this season they became the eighth NCAA Division I team to finish a season winless, going 0-28.
In terms of rivalries, the biggest rivals for the Grambling State Tigers on the court are the Southern Jaguars.
They currently play all of their home games at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. Their current head coach is Donte Jackson.
A New Coach
At the end of June 2017, Grambling State University Director of Athletics Paul Bryant officially signed on a new coach for the Tigers’ basketball team: Donte’ Jackson.
Jackson has an impressive record. Before coming to GSU, he spent three seasons at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he was the head coach of the men’s basketball team. He had an overall record of 66-21 and even won the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Tournament. He also earned a berth in the NCAA tournament and went on to win against West Georgia in the first round of the tournament.
He was also named the SIAC Coach of the Year at the end of 2015-16 season and BOXTOROW National Coach of the Year.
With these accomplishments, he could be a major asset to the Tigers and can help them turn their fortunes around.
